Riding a bike from Rawalpindi to Leepa Valley was an exciting adventure that combined the thrill of travel with the calm of nature. Leepa Valley, located in northern Azad Kashmir, is famous for its stunning views—green meadows, snowy mountains, and clear streams make it a great spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The Journey Begins:
Our trip from Rawalpindi to Leepa Valley began early in the morning of 23 April 2023, during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. We started our ride from Rawalpindi at 6:00 AM as the sun was rising. The cool morning air was refreshing, and we could really feel our excitement for the journey. After filling up our Suzuki 150 cc at Panj Sarki Petrol Station in Saddar, we set off towards Leepa Valley, eager to start our holiday adventure.
Rawalpindi to Islamabad:
The first part of the trip from Rawalpindi to Islamabad was smooth. We took the Murree Expressway (N75), a good road that goes up gently into the hills. The morning sunlight made the landscape look beautiful. This 1.5-hour drive was easy and enjoyable, with lovely views of green hills as we approached Murree.
Murree:
By mid-morning, we arrived in Murree, a popular hill station known for its beautiful scenery. We took a short break to stretch our legs and enjoy the views. The cool mountain breeze was a nice change from the city heat, and we appreciated the break before continuing our journey.
Murree to Muzaffarabad:
After our break, we continued towards Muzaffarabad. The road here became narrower and twistier. Crossing the Kohala Bridge, which marked our entry into Azad Kashmir, was a highlight. The bridge gave us great views of the Jhelum River below, making our ride even more enjoyable.
Arrival in Muzaffarabad:
We reached Muzaffarabad around lunchtime. The lively atmosphere was perfect for a midday break. We explored the area, had lunch at a local restaurant, and relaxed before moving on. We refuelled our bike here for about 1,200 rupees and checked the tire pressure. We bought some bike tubes for extra comfort since the hard seats were uncomfortable.
Heading Towards Reshian:
After lunch, we set off towards Reshian, the base for reaching Leepa Valley. This part of the journey had both paved and hilly roads. The Jhelum Valley Road gave us beautiful views of the river on our right. As the terrain became more challenging with steep climbs and winding curves, we had to be careful, especially with the risk of landslides.
Reaching the Gateway to Leepa Valley:
We arrived in Reshian in the late afternoon. Here, the road conditions changed to rough and unpaved. We knew the final stretch to Leepa Valley would be the toughest. As the sun set and it got colder, we prepared for the last part of our trip.
Arrival in Leepa Valley:
At about 6 in the evening, we finally reached Leepa Valley. As it got dark, the valley’s beauty became even more striking. The fresh, crisp air and the snow-capped mountains made the journey from Rawalpindi to Leepa Valley, which is about 250 kilometres, well worth the effort. We were thrilled to see patches of snow still on the roads, which made the scenery even more beautiful.
Accommodation:
Staying at J&K Guest House Resort Leepa was a highlight. Located in the heart of the valley, the cosy guesthouse offered great views of the mountains and meadows. The accommodation was simple but comfortable, with a warm bed and a hot meal. The friendly staff made our stay memorable. The cost for one night, including dinner and breakfast, was 3,500 PKR.
The Return Journey:
The next morning, we had breakfast before checking out around 10 AM. We spent about 5 to 6 hours exploring Leepa Valley, enjoying its peaceful surroundings and beautiful views. After our visit, we started the journey back to Rawalpindi. The return trip was quicker, and we arrived back in Rawalpindi late at night, around midnight.

Several highlights stood out during our trip: Murree’s hill station atmosphere provided a fantastic start with its beautiful views and refreshing climate. The Kohala Bridge offered amazing views of the Jhelum River, making it a memorable crossing. Muzaffarabad’s lively atmosphere and local food made for a great lunch stop. Finally, Leepa Valley’s untouched beauty and peaceful environment were the perfect conclusion to our journey.
Budget:
Our trip cost around 11,000 PKR. We spent 2,100 PKR on petrol for the outward journey and 1,200 PKR for the return trip. Tire air pressure is 60 PKR, and accessories like the tube seat cost 830 PKR. We spent 100 PKR on biscuits, 300 PKR on bakery items, 660 PKR on lunch, and 650 PKR on snacks. Our one-night stay with meals was 3,500 PKR. Miscellaneous expenses included 200 PKR for tea and samosas, and dinner in Murree on the second day cost 1,000 PKR. Overall, the trip was affordable and enjoyable.
